How I became a Maximal tour guide… and you can too!
What: My experience as a tour guide / Where: Belgium, Germany, Hungary & Czech Republic / When: multiple years / Genre: Everything!
It was bright red, that cap. They called it the ‘Maximal Tripper cap’. It comes from ‘trucker cap’, they told me, but this time it’s a cap for trippers. An office joke. I was the one to put it on first, and suddenly I was a Maximal tour guide. Maximal Trips asked me to write something about my experience as a tour guide, this is going to be published at the website. Nice for future tour guides and nice for me because I love to write a good story. The collaboration in a nutshell: at Maximal Trips you get freedom. Interested in becoming a tour guide? I’ve been a tour guide to Dour, Sziget, Let It Roll and MELT Festival and I loved every single adventure! Looking back I never would have thought that I would be responsible for over 170 travellers.
We went with two double-deckers towards Dour in Belgium. There was a tour guide on each bus and I was the one who reported back to Maximal Trips. Very exciting and informative but above all: so much fun!
Right after I sent a message to become a tour guide I got a call from Job from Maximal Trips. We had a nice conversation and Job asked me about who I was and why I wanted to become a tour guide. Before I knew it I found myself in a briefing where all the ins and outs of the tour leadership were discussed.
Handing out beers on our way to the festival
I noticed that Maximal Trips has a lot of experience with organising bus trips towards festivals. A returning subject where the aspects of ‘organising‘ and ‘to excite‘. It was very informative and also very fun to meet and get to know all of the other tour guides.
Stuffed with documents, a clipboard, insiders tips and the famous cap, I prepared myself for my first trip.
Working as a Maximal tour guide
Of course it was a bit exciting the first time. But as a tour guide you have a lot of privilages other travellers don’t have so I would have the most comfortable trip of all. An example is being seated at the best seat in front of the bus. You get to decide when you hand out the (free) beers and when the bus will take a break. All of the travellers are really nice: everyone is excited for the festival.
Sometimes you put on a movie or some music, other times you just turn off the lights. Maximal Trips is always available for a call and involved the whole trip. I noticed how cool it is to be a tour guide at the festival itself because suddenly I had 80+ festival friends. This way the camping raves became much more fun.
Not entirely unimportant: the compensation is perfectly fine as well.
I’ll travel again with Maximal Trips next summer and I am already looking forward to this trip. And I’m curious which colour the tripper cap will be, of course. I hope it will be candy cane pink.
Does this seem exciting to you? Who knows, maybe we will meet during one of the bus trips. You can apply for the job as a Maximal tour guide. Check out the job offer here.
